Who is MP Mastaplan

Mastaplan, also known as MP, is an accomplished Afrobeats artiste, songwriter and creative pioneer whose musical journey traces back to the early foundations of the modern Afrobeats movement. Widely recognized for his contributions during the genre’s formative years, MP played an instrumental role in shaping the sound and global reach of Afrobeats long before it became an international phenomenon.MP began his musical career as a member of the renowned UK-based collective JJC & The 419 Squad, one of the pioneering groups that helped introduce Afrobeats to mainstream audiences across Europe. Formed in the United Kingdom, the group gained recognition for electrifying performances on major stages throughout London and beyond, including appearances at the Notting Hill Carnival, the WOMAD Festival, and numerous BBC stage shows across the UK. Their music received widespread exposure on national television, film features, and platforms such as MTV Base Africa.

In 2002, JJC & The 419 Squad released the album Atide, a project that cemented their place in Afrobeats history. The group’s success earned multiple accolades, including the prestigious Kora Award for Best African Group in 2004, along with Nigerian Music Awards in the UK for Best Group.

Following this success, Mastaplan embarked on a solo career under the shortened name MP, relocating to Nigeria where he further established himself as a dynamic artist. Transitioning into his solo career, he founded Limelite Records together with his producer and business partner, Dapsee. Through this label, they developed and created work that launched his career as a solo artist.His solo releases, including No Dull Yourself and The One For Me, gained strong airplay across radio stations, while his breakout hit PasaPasa became a major anthem and earned him a nomination for the Next Rated Award at the 2009 Hip Hop World Awards, now known as The Headies Awards. Beyond performing, MP has also contributed creatively behind the scenes, writing music for several notable artists, further expanding his influence within the industry.

After stepping away from the spotlight for nearly eighteen years, MP’s legacy and impact were recognized in the Netflix documentary Afrobeats: The Backstory, produced by Ayo Shonaiya, which chronicles the pioneers who laid the groundwork for today’s global Afrobeats movement. The documentary highlights MP’s role both as a member of JJC & The 419 Squad and as a solo artist during the genre’s early evolution.Nearly two decades removed from active recording, MP is gradually returning to music — a passion that has always remained central to his identity. Fans can revisit his earlier catalog on YouTube alongside new releases that mark his re-entry into the scene.
